It originated online in 2016 so it's still a relatively young celebration, but the holiday has been gaining traction in recent years through social media and the LGBTQ+ community. The term "guncle" is a portmanteau of "gay" and "uncle," and the day aims to recognize the unique role many gay uncles play in the lives of their families and nieces and nephews, highlighting their contributions, love, and support.
